- Background: Born on January 23, 1897, in Cuttack, Odisha, he hailed from an affluent, well-educated Bengali family. His father, Janakinath Bose, was a successful lawyer, while his mother, Prabhabati Bose, was actively involved in social and political causes.
- Education: His academic journey spanned prestigious institutions, including Ravenshaw Collegiate School, Presidency College in Kolkata, and the University of Cambridge.
- Public Service: Though he successfully passed the rigorous Indian Civil Service examination, he famously resigned from the position, refusing to serve under British colonial authority.
- Struggle for Freedom: He was a dedicated activist who launched the newspaper Swaraj to advocate for Indian independence. To mobilize support against British rule, he traveled extensively across Europe and Asia, building international alliances.
- The Indian National Army: In 1942, during the Second World War, he organized the Indian National Army (INA), or Azad Hind Fauj, with Japanese support. He also pioneered the formation of the Rani of Jhansi Regiment, the world’s first all-female combat unit.
