Mahatma Gandhi: A Leader of Non-Violence
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, widely known as Mahatma Gandhi, was a central figure in India’s struggle for independence from British colonial rule.
- Early Life: Born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, Gujarat, to parents Karamchand Gandhi and Putlibai, he later traveled to England to pursue a degree in law.
- Time in South Africa: From 1893 to 1914, Gandhi practiced law in South Africa. It was during this period that he encountered significant racial discrimination, which led him to develop his philosophy of Satyagraha (truth-force) and non-violent resistance.
- Indian Independence Movement: After returning to India in 1914, he became deeply involved in the independence movement in 1915. He spearheaded numerous peaceful campaigns, most notably the Champaran Satyagraha (1917), the Salt Satyagraha (1930), and the Quit India Movement (1942).
- Legacy: Tragically, his life was cut short on January 30, 1948, when he was assassinated by Nathuram Godse. Today, he is revered globally as a pioneer of non-violent protest and is affectionately remembered in India as the “Father of the Nation.”
